The critic Robert Parker, a little history

Robert Parker is an iconic figure in the world of winemaking, known for revolutionizing the way wines are evaluated and perceived globally. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Parker began his career as a lawyer before devoting himself fully to his passion for wine. He is the founder of the publication "The Wine Advocate", through which he has profoundly influenced the wine industry with his detailed and often bucking reviews. Let us remember in this regard that the magazine's moment of success came in 1982 , when Parker enthusiastically reviewed that year's Bordeaux vintage. Contrary to most critics of the time, who were more cautious in their judgments, Parker proclaimed the 1982 vintage as exceptional, predicting that the wines of that vintage would have great success. His assessment proved accurate, and the Bordeaux wine market saw a significant increase in sales and prices.

Parker's rating system , with scores ranging from 50 to 100, has become an industry standard since the 1980s, providing consumers with a reliable guide for choosing wines. A score above 90 points is considered an indicator of excellence , and wines that achieve this score often see a considerable increase in their prestige and market demand.

Parker is renowned for his integrity and independence ; he has always insisted on the importance of maintaining his autonomy from commercial influences, refusing advertising in "The Wine Advocate" and financing his wine tastings personally. This approach helped build his reputation as an honest and impartial critic.

In 2019, Parker announced his permanent retirement from tasting and evaluating wines, passing the baton to his team of experts at “ The Wine Advocate .” Despite his retirement, Robert Parker's legacy lives on through his rating system.
