Pinotage is a grape variety that originated in South Africa in 1925 from a unique cross between Pinot Noir and Hermitage (or Cinsaut). The father of Pinotage was Abraham Izak Perold, a university professor and winemaker who sought the best resistance to the dry summers of the Western Cape region of South Africa.

On the nose, Kadette Pinotage has deep plum aromas, with red currant, black cherry, strawberry confit, nutmeg and wood spice. The palate is medium-full-bodied and intense, with finely textured tannins.

On the palate flavors of sweet red fruits, cherries and a hint of nutmeg, spice and dark chocolate. The acidity is balanced with the fruit and wood components and adds a touch of freshness to the red and black fruit flavors on the finish.

Table pairings: Kadette Pinotage 2020 pairs grandly with beloved pizza, as well as pasta or red meat dishes, as well as spicy dishes.

Expected evolution: Kadette Pinotage is at its best within 7 years of bottling.

Alcohol content: 14.5%.

Cork cap.

Origin

Wine of Origin South Africa, Stellenbosch.

In the vineyard

The previous winter was characterized by sufficient rainfall and cold days. Throughout the harvest period the weather remained favorable, with relatively warm days, no significant heat waves and cool night temperatures. The vineyards are 7 to 22 years old and are cultivated in clay soils, locally referred to as “Hutton.” Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage production averages 6-7 tons/ha.

In the cellar

Fermentation takes place in open concrete tanks at a temperature of about 28 °. The grapes are left to macerate on the skins for 3 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 12 months in second and third use 225 L Nevers French oak barriques. Bottling and refinement of a few months before release follows.
